Leon Samuels attempt on the 8 hour strong wool ewe record at Argyle Station, Waikaia, New Zealand was aborted at 11.00 a.m. (lunch time) with Leon 19 sheep behind the required tally.
Rowland Smith’s tally of 644 set in July 2017 remains the 8 hour strong wool ewe record.
Referees for the attempt were: Peter Artridge (Convener) Australia), Ian Buchanan, Paul Harris, John Fraser (N Z).

Rowland Smith, New Zealand set a new World Record shearing 644 strong wool ewes in eight hours at Trefranck Farm, St Clether, Cornwall, England, smashing the previous record of 605 achieved by Leon Samuels in New Zealand, February 2017. Possibly the first time brothers have held two different World shearing records at the same time;
Rowland Smith 644 --- 8 hour strong wool ewe record.
Matthew Smith 731 --- 9 hour strong wool ewe record.
Referees for this record were; Eddie Archer (South Africa) convener, John Fraser (N Z), Martyn David, Arwyn Jones (United Kingdom).

A new three stand, eight hour strong wool ewe record was set at Waitara Station, Mohaka, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Luke Mullins 554, Eru Weeds 539, James Mack 518 with a total of 1611, broke the previous mark set in the Hawkes Bay just over a year ago by 264. All three shearers are residents of New Zealand. Referees on the day were Peter Black (Australia) convener, Arwyn Jones & Martyn David (Wales), Colin Gibson, Mike Barnett, Ian Buchanan (N Z) along with trainee referee from Australia Mike Henderson observing.
Tuesday 10th January 2017
Coel L'Huillier (N Z) 537 & Kelvin Walker (N Z) 531 set a new two stand World Record eclipsing by two the previous eight hour strong wool ewe record by Rowland & Doug Smith, January 2011. The new mark of 1068 was achieved at Te Hape B Trust, Benneydale, King Country, New Zealand, keeping the large crowd attending in suspense right up until 5 p.m. Referees on the day were; David Brooker (Australia) convening his first record attempt as a Referee, Arwyn Jones (Wales), Bart Hadfield, Paul Harris & John Fraser, (N Z). Trainee referees attending were; Martyn David (Wales), Mike Henderson (Australia) & Robert McLaren (N Z). Chairman of the World Sheep Shearing Records Society John Fagan presented Martyn David with his official refereeing badge at the end of the day.

Kerri Jo Te Huia set a Women’s World Record shearing 452 strong wool ewes in nine hours at Otapawa Station, Tiraumea, Wairarapa, New Zealand. Records Society Chairman John Fagan reported a high quality job on perendale ewes that carried fourteen months wool and were feisty making for a very tough day’s shearing for Kerri Jo.
Referees on the day were: Arwyn Jones (U K) convener, Ian Buchanan, Bart Hadfield, Robert McLaren (N Z).

Steven Mudford's attempt on the eight hour merino wether record at Parkdale SRS Stud, Dubbo, NSW, Australia fell short of Dave Grant's record of 356 with a final tally of 345. Referees on the day were Mike Barnett (N Z ) convener, Grant Borchardt, Peter Artridge, Mark Baldwin (Australia).

Leon Samuels set a new World Record shearing 605 strong wool ewes in eight hours at Argyle Station, Waikaia, Southland, New Zealand breaking Stacey Te Huia's mark by two set at Moketenui Station, King Country, New Zealand in December 2010.
Referees were; Ralph Blue, Australia (Convener), Paul Harris, John Fraser, Robert McLaren New Zealand.

A new three stand, eight hour strong wool lamb World Record was set at Moketenui Station, Mangepehi, King Country, New Zealand. Welshmen Matthew Evans 614 & Delwyn Jones 602 along with New Zealand's Ryan Miller 609 shearing for Neil Fagan's Gang set a new mark of 1825 breaking the long standing record held by 'Digger' Balme, Roger Neil & Dean Ball since January 1999 by forty-one. Referees on the day were; David Brooker (Australia) convening, Ian Buchanan, Paul Harris, Bart Hadfield, Colin Gibson, John Fraser (N Z) Martyn David (Wales). Observing trainee referees were Mike Henderson (Australia) & Robert McLaren (N Z). New Zealand trainee Robert McLaren was presented with his official refereeing badge by John Fagan, Chairman of the World Sheep Shearing Records Society at the end of a very successful day, capped off by an impromptu rendition of Wale's National Anthem sung by Wale's supporters and a rousing haka for Kiwi Ryan Miller.
